University Guidance & Careers

Throughout the VI Form, a structured programme of presentations, visiting speakers, workshops and individual advisory sessions ensure that every student has access to the support and guidance they need. Students will receive help and guidance in the following areas:

  • UCAS Applications
  • Personal Statement writing
  • Which University? Which course?
  • Interview practice

Students also visit universities and career and university fairs where they will have the opportunity to speak to representatives from Higher Education and discuss their particular concerns.

Every two years, The Laurels holds a Careers Fair making the most of parents and friends of The Laurels who come to talk to the students about their own career journeys. These have included:

  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Teaching
  • Medicine
  • Finance Services
  • Journalism

Work Experience

Relevant work experience is arranged for all Lower VI pupils in the first week of July. Pupils will be encouraged to be proactive in providing their own placements although we work to ensure that all students are placed.

Personal Fitness

The Sixth Form PE programme at The Laurels builds upon the pathway established in KS4, which educates the pupils in a sport for life. In VI Form, the aim is to help students stay healthy by taking control of their fitness. We will work towards developing personal training programmes for each girl and help them to follow it using the equipment in local sports facilities. We will be reviewing the programme every half term and help each girl to stay focused in their training, which will improve their fitness as well as their overall health. This in turn will improve their focus and drive for their academic studies.

We will also be continuing our encouragement of the girls to take part in competitive sport, so we will be organising fixtures in sports of interest to the girls.

The Inspirational Women Speakers

Our desire for our Laurels VI Formers is that they have as many opportunities as possible to meet and listen to women who can inspire and raise their aspirations to greatness – to be better people, to learn courage and fortitude, to strive and work hard, to reflect on what is truly important in life.
