🏀On Tuesday we had a Netball masterclass! • The focus for our PE enrichment day was a netball masterclass with our guest coach Jenni from Netball Excellence Training! The day was packed with 3 specialist sessions of attacking, defending and shooting. Over 50 students were involved in this day across all year groups. Girls throughout the school entered the ISA Essay Competition, and three of our students were successful👏🏻 • Helenka came first in the Max Gate category for her short story about a girl alone in a caravan. The judge commented, ‘I was left wanting to read more from this talented student’. • Samar’s personal essay reflecting poignantly on stances in society was highly commended in the Favonius category. • Christina, our new Head Girl, came second in the Sixth Form English and Linguistics Category with her short story. Judges praised her scene setting and pacing. • Congratulations to Helenka, Samar and Christina! As a small school, we are very proud of such success in a national competition🌟

🎭 Marta in Year 7 had an amazing trip to Mary Arden's Farm near Stratford Upon Avon on Monday as part of her prize for winning the #ISA #Shakespeare Monologue Competition. • This included a tour of the farm and buildings (including meeting an array of animals), taking part in a drama workshop exploring the text in Macbeth and the chance to perform her monologue in the historic venue. 🎼 We’re absolutely delighted for three of our Year 10 pupils who have achieved outstanding success in an international arts competition. The Laurels achieved 1st place, 3rd place and a commendation in the charity @neversuch annual event for 9 – 18 year olds. Almost 3000 entrants from different countries submitted poetry, art and speeches, as well as musical pieces, all answering the question, ‘What does war mean to you?’ • Coming first in the song competition is particularly poignant for Kseniia, who joined us just last May from Ukraine. Her piece, ‘Void’, is based on a dream she experienced in the build-up to the invasion and is pop-style, featuring electric piano, guitar, a drumbeat and cello. It’s #worldheritageday ! • On World Heritage Day, we’re looking back at the history of our site here in South London. It’s a fascinating story, linking The Laurels School to countries across the world, and ensuring that the buildings continue in their original purpose, of educating children. • Our beautiful neo-Gothic buildings, designed by William Wardell, were originally built as an orphanage in the 19th Century for the nuns of the Congregation of Our Lady of Fidelity, who had come to England from France with the intention of setting up a school and orphanage for Irish immigrant children.

Business Psychologist Sarah Roberts ran a workshop for members of the VI Form today on successful interviews. 🕯️In our Holocaust Memorial Day assembly this morning we heard about the lives of the ordinary people connected to the Holocaust. Y7-9 shared some of their reflections about Nicholas Winton and the Kindertransport, linking this to compassion, which is our virtue of the half term. • We also heard stories from students and teachers about their personal connections to the Holocaust. This included family members who had served in the British army and were involved in liberating the camps, resistance fighters from France, Poland, and the Netherlands, and those who died at the hands of the Nazis. • At 4pm today, we shone a light in the darkness to bear witness to the stories we heard today, and all those lost in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. • El Male Rachamim “The Everlasting is their heritage, the Garden of Eden shall be their resting room, and they shall rest peacefully upon their lying place, they will stand for their fate in the end of days, and let us say: Amen” #HolocaustMemorialDay #lightthedarkness🕯️
