Computer Science
Computer Science is taught at The Laurels to help pupils become proficient, safe and accomplished users of technology. At key stage 3 level, we teach Computer Science at Foundation level (a broad brush approach) and those who wish to, can continue their study of computing at GCSE and A-Level.
“The original idea of the web was that it should be a collaborative space where you can communicate through sharing information.” - Tim Berners-Lee Inventor of the World Wide Web
My Learning at The Laurels
- To become proficient and competent users of modern day computer systems in helping them meet their current and future learning needs across the curriculum.
- To be equipped to use the internet safely (e-Safety) and be able to undertake effective independent/self-guided research to support their class work and homework.
- To be aware of the diversity of careers and opportunities in Computing.
- For those who have a passion about the subject to develop this further at GCSE and A-level creating a pathway for further education and/or career opportunities in the technology sector.
Course Content
The Laurels uses
Google Workspace for Education as its primary platform for our classwork and homework. In addition, subject teachers supplement this platform with carefully selected additional resources both online and hardcopy format. Filters are applied so age-appropriate resources approved by subject teachers are available on our school owned devices and pupils own (pre-approved) laptops.
Key Stage 3
In line with the national curriculum, Years 7-9 follow a progressive computing curriculum to reflect the changing pace of technology today. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
Key Stage 4 / GCSE
Specification: OCR GCSE Computer Science (J277).
This is a two-year course studied by pupils who choose this as a GCSE option (with some content starting in Y9) although they will have studied some key concepts earlier in KS3. The course encourages students to understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science
Key Stage 5 / A-Level
Specification: OCR A-Level Computer Science (H446).
This is a two year course studied by pupils who choose this as a A-Level option starting in LVI/Y12. The OCR A Level in Computer Science will encourage learners to be inspired, motivated and challenged by following a broad, coherent, practical, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It will provide insight into, and experience of how computer science works, stimulating learners’ curiosity and encouraging them to engage with computer science in their everyday lives and to make informed choices about further study or career choices.
