Geography

At Oakwood we teach Geography to our pupils from the basics such as seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK to more advanced knowledge such as the key topographical features of the UK and how regions can change over time.

In Year 1 we develop locational and place knowledge about their locality, and the UK as a whole -Understand basic subject - specific vocabulary relating to physical geography.

In Year 2 we teach pupils to name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans. They learn about the human and physical geography of a small area in (several) non-European countries by reading images, maps, atlases and globes.

In Year 3 they describe and understand the key aspects of volcanoes and earthquakes including understanding that the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes follows a pattern.

In Year 4 we enhance their locational and place knowledge. We focus on North and South America, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities. Pupils use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping. They also learn to use the eight points of a compass.

In Year 5 we use maps to focus on countries, cities and regions in Europe and understand a region of another European country. We extend their knowledge and understanding, including location and characteristics of human and physical features, beyond the local area to include Europe.

In Year 6, our pupils are able to identify UK, GB and British Isles. They learn the key topographical features of the UK and can investigate how a region has changed and how it affected the people living there.
