The magic of Mary Poppins Jr

Our first ever musical is a triumph

You know you’ve had a wonderful night at the theatre when the tunes are still in your head the following morning, so there must have been plenty of people in South London last weekend waking up to the strains of ‘A spoonful of sugar’ and ‘Let’s go fly a kite’.

The Laurels’ production of Mary Poppins Jr was a triumph. So many girls wanted to have a part, and auditioned so strongly, that there were two casts. Both put on an extraordinary show which highlighted the talents of the pupils in singing, dancing, acting and stage-managing a production full of drama, colourful sets and multiple costume changes.

The magic of Mary Poppins is the belief that ‘anything can happen if you let it’, and there were moments of pure magic in the production, particularly in the big numbers where the whole ensemble made us believe that we were on the London roof-tops at one moment and that Mary Poppins really could just appear from nowhere at the next.

It was obvious that a lot of work had gone into the performance. Many thanks to Miss Cook, our director of drama, for the many hours she devoted to putting on such a stellar production. The girls triumphed over stage nerves, learned their lines, handmade some amazing props, found singing voices they maybe never knew they had, and gave us a night at the theatre to remember.
